Media Watchdogs

Citizens can become overconfident that the watchful eye of the media is liberal democracy’s ever vigilant protector. What happens when the trusted watchdog falls asleep at the gate? High public expectations? It’s a dog’s life being a watchdog! The tendency to doze comes naturally. At the same time, when rudely awakened, sleeping dogs often bark reactively, not yet knowing why, but too often warding off friendly visitors rather than intruders. And it’s just as tough fighting the lazy tendency, warding off distortion, hype and hysteria. Nowhere is the urge to premature growling so instinctive than with subjects concerning science, which are more difficult to chase than the scent of the familiar. Someone throw me a bone! The science subjects require a real nose, sniffing the pros and cons of following one trail or another. The public’s right to know is only as well fulfilled as the watchdog’s moral obligation to “woof! woof!” without either superficiality or bias. BUZZWORD is a serious attempt to help you chew the contentious bone of biocontrols as a final solution to the war on drugs. This is not a minor event; it’s the Wesminster Kennel Club of great watchdogs!
